On a bright and pleasantly warm Saturday, Sept. 20, downtown Mount Vernon transfigured into the enchanting world of Middle-earth as the Downtown Mount Vernon Merchants hosted a Middle-Earth March, a spirited celebration of National Hobbit Day. The event drew fans, families, and curious visitors alike for a day brimming with fantasy, fun, and community spirit, as local businesses banded together to create a truly immersive experience worthy of any Tolkien fan.

In honor of the cherished birthday of Bilbo and Frodo Baggins, the merchants pulled together what could only be described as an absolute dragon’s hoard of specials, activities, and prizes. Among the highlights was the whimsical game of Frodo Toss, which took center stage on the sidewalk outside Almost Famous Sweets & Sodas, a downtown staple. Participants eagerly lined up to stomp their foot on a spring-loaded board that launched a stuffed Frodo into the air, hoping he would land in the center of a target circle, each hopeful for a chance to win sweet rewards.

Guests were handed a passport, a charming guide designed to lead them through the various local businesses dotted throughout the downtown area. This passport wasn’t just a map — it was a riddle-filled treasure hunt. Each participating store posed a riddle inspired by Chapter V of The Hobbit, challenging attendees to put their Middle-earth knowledge to the test before earning a stamp in their passport. This interactive journey encouraged visitors to explore the rich tapestry of shops and specialty vendors, all while engaging with the timeless lore of Tolkien’s masterpiece.

Costumes and creativity flourished as many attendees embraced the spirit of the day, donning Hobbit-inspired outfits and other fantasy attire. From intricately crafted cloaks to curly Hobbit feet slippers, the streets brimmed with enthusiasm and playful homage, bringing the world of Middle-Earth to life in vivid color and joyous camaraderie.

Caroline Hall went all out for the Middle-Earth March Through Mount Vernon.

Each business rose to the occasion with a variety of thematic specials, sales, and products to delight guests. Almost Famous Sweets & Sodas displayed and sold two exclusive beverages imported directly from Harry Potter Alley in the Shambles, York, Britain: the delightfully sweet Tears of Wizard Crème Soda and the boldly fizzy Cauldron Cola. These magical concoctions added an extra sprinkle of whimsy to the event, bridging fantasy worlds for a truly unforgettable experience.

Nearby, The Alcove offered themed cocktails crafted with the flair of a Hobbit’s hearty hospitality, inviting visitors to toast the festivities with drinks inspired by the Shire’s rustic charm. Not to be outdone, Angry Acres Farm brought a bit of the Shire itself to Mount Vernon with their Shire Petting Zoo, featuring friendly goats that delighted children and adults alike — a perfect nod to the pastoral lifestyle cherished by Hobbits.

When asked which Hobbit meal she would never skip, Caroline Hall smiled and said, “Afternoon tea, because an afternoon snack gets you through the rest of the day.” Her answer resonated with the spirit of the event: celebrating simple pleasures and the joy found in fellowship and good food, and hallmarks of both Hobbit culture and Mount Vernon’s welcoming community.

When the afternoon light softened over the bustling streets, the magic of Middle-Earth lingered, proving that with a bit of creativity and a whole lot of heart, downtown Mount Vernon can become a portal to any world one wishes to explore.

In the words of the cherished wizard Albus Dumbledore, “Happiness can be found, even in the darkest of times, if one only remembers to turn on the light.” Thanks to the dedicated downtown businesses and their boundless imagination, the Middle-earth March was a shining beacon of joy, community, and shared adventure.

Here’s to many more celebrations that bring stories to life and create memories that linger long after the last stamp is placed on a passport.
