On Sept. 23, Mount Vernon FFA members competed in the annual County Soils Contest hosted by the Knox Soil and Water Conservation District in Danville. The event brought together approximately 150 FFA members from across the county to apply their knowledge of soil science in a real-world setting.
Mount Vernon had 27 students participate in the contest, which challenged students to evaluate soil properties by examining soil pits and making informed decisions about land use. Through hands-on evaluation of soil depth, texture, structure, erosion, and drainage, participants determined the land’s capabilities and limitations for agricultural production and building site suitability. The contest not only sharpens students’ technical skills but also emphasizes the importance of soil stewardship, land productivity, and responsible land and water management.
