KC Foundation grant to support Kokosing River cleanup, safety effort

$4,030 award equips Friends of the Kokosing Scenic River volunteers with cold-weather gear to clear debris, protect water quality and improve boater access year-round

The Knox County Foundation has awarded a $4,030 grant to support a groundbreaking initiative aimed at improving water quality and recreational safety along the Kokosing Scenic River.

Led by the Friends of the Kokosing Scenic River, the project will equip volunteers with dry suits and specialized tools to enable safe, year-round river cleanup and hazard mitigation.

Currently, volunteer efforts are limited to 8–9 months of the year due to cold-weather conditions. Without proper gear, litter and debris accumulate during the off-season, threatening water quality and drifting downstream. This initiative fills a critical gap by empowering volunteers to operate safely in colder months, ensuring that Knox County litter stays in Knox County — disposed of properly and not passed downstream.

“This project is about protecting the Kokosing every day of the year,” said Ashlee Smith, president of Friends of the Kokosing Scenic River. “With the right equipment, our volunteers can remove debris, clear hazards, and keep the river safe and beautiful for everyone.”

The initiative also aims to improve access for kayakers and canoers by making downed trees passable, enhancing safety and preserving the river as a destination for outdoor recreation and tourism.
