Offensive explosion helps MV win three LCL games

The Mount Vernon softball won five games in a row this week.

A four-run fifth inning helped lift Mount Vernon to an 8-6 victory over host Utica on April 30.

Gabby Beck and Hailey Rudrick each homered and doubled for Mount Vernon. Keely Pollard had two doubles and two singles, while Brooklynn Cook and Mea Joyner had a single and a double each, and Jocelyn Scarbury doubled.

Miranda Oswalt started on the hill for MV, striking out one in one inning of work. Beck followed up with five innings on the hill, fanning six, while Scarbury picked up the save.

The Yellow Jackets followed that up with a pair of victories at River Valley. MV pounded out 13 hits in a 15-6 victory over the Vikings in the first game.

Rudrick and Harley Styndl each smacked two doubles and a single to pace MV. Pollard added a single and a double.

Scarbury threw the first three innings, striking out five. Allydia Bell finished up.

In the second game, the Jackets rallied from two down to beat Springfield, 6-2.

Cook swatted a solo home run, while Rudrick had a double, single and three RBI for MV. Beck and Scarbury both doubled.

Scarbury started for MV, striking out four in four innings of work. Beck finished up, fanning two.

The Jackets cranked out 15 hits in a 15-1 victory over Zanesville on Monday.

Cook led the assault with a home run, double, single and three RBI. Lexi Ringwalt and Maddy Peterson each had two doubles, while Isla Graham had three singles and Keely Pollard doubled.

Oswalt went the distance on the mound, striking out nine.

An eight-run third inning propelled Mount Vernon to a 10-1 victory over Granville on Tuesday.

Rudrick smacked a home run, a single and drove in three runs to lead MV. Cook added a solo home run, while Ringwalt had two singles and two RBI.

Scarbury went the distance on the mound, striking out eight.

Baseball

The Yellow Jackets started off with a 13-4 beating of Utica on April 29.

Jax McPeek led the offensive assault with two home runs, a double and a single, driving in seven runners. Travis Burak added a double and three singles, while Nolan Hershberger had three singles and three RBI, and Cooper Waers had two singles.

Zack Beck tossed the first 4.2 innings for MV, striking out one. Waers finished up, fanning two.

On May 1, Granville scored four times in the eighth inning to pin a 5-1 loss on the Jackets.

Hershberger led MV with two singles, while McPeek doubled in the only run. Gavin Gorsuch and Beck both singled.

Coen Armstrong went the distance on the mound, striking out five.

Mount Vernon scored two in the ninth inning to pull out the exciting, 5-3, victory over host Zanesville on Monday.

Hershberger had an RBI single and McPeek drove in a run with a double in the deciding inning. Hershberger also had a double, while Burak also had a double and single. Deem checked in with two singles.

Hershberger tossed the first 6.1 innings, striking out five for MV. Beck finished up, fanning two.
