Jackets close regular season with offensive explosion

MV softballers score in double figures in all five wins

The Mount Vernon softball team wrapped up its regular season with five victories this week. That ran their win streak to 11 games heading into the postseason.

Offense was the name of the game all week, with the Jackets pounding out 14 hits in a 14-0 victory over Lakewood on May 6.

Hailey Rudrick smacked three home runs and drove in six runners to lead the Jackets. Jocelyn Scarbury cracked a home run and a double, while Brooklyn Cook had two doubles. Keely Pollard also doubled, while Harley Styndl, Lexi Ringwalt, Kendall Melton, Layla Joyner, Isla Graham and Miranda Oswalt all singled.

Scarbury went the distance on the mound, striking out 11.

The Yellow Jackets followed that up with a 19-1 beatdown of Licking Heights.

Five Jackets hit home runs in the game — Cook, Rudrick, Pollard, Melton and Ringwalt. Pollard and Ringwalt added two singles each, while Rudrick and Cook both had a double. Oswalt, Maddy Peterson, Allydia Bell, Styndl, Joyner and Graham all singled.

Scarbury pitched the first two innings, striking out six. Gabby Beck followed with a two strikeout inning, while Oswalt and Emerson Creech each had one strikeout in an inning.

On May 9, the Jackets picked up two victories — 11-2 over Madison and 12-1 over Marysville.

Rudrick smacked a home run and two doubles to lead MV over Madison. Pollard added a home run, double and five RBI, while Styndl had a triple and a single. Ringwalt cracked two singles, and Scarbury, Peterson and Joyner had one each.

Beck struck out eight in her 5.2 innings of work for MV. Bell finished up, fanning three.

Beck had a home run and a double to lead the Jackets in the win over Marysville. Rudrick had a double and a single, while Cook and Graham had two singles each. Scarbury and Melton both doubled, and Pollard and Styndl had one single apiece.

Scarbury went the distance on the mound, striking out eight.

Mount Vernon (22-4) finished off the regular season with a 13-1 victory over Olentangy Berlin on May 11.

Styndl had a home run, two singles and four RBI to lead MV. Beck and Pollard had a double and a single each, while Joyner had two singles. Scarbury and Ringwalt added doubles, and Rudrick had a single.

Beck struck out nine and allowed just four hits in the complete game victory.

Baseball

The Mount Vernon baseball team picked up four victories this week.

Zack Beck tossed a three-hitter as MV beat Lakewood, 3-1, on May 6.

Beck struck out six in his complete game victory.

Offensively, Jax McPeek, Gavin Gorsuch and Dammon Wolfe each had two singles to lead the Jackets. Greyson Deem, Cooper Waers and Travis Burak had one hit apiece.

MV jumped out to an early lead and beat Licking Heights, 6-2, on May 8.

Waers led the Jackets with three singles and two RBI. Wolfe added two singles, while Nolan Hershberger, McPeek and Palmer Holton had one each.

Coen Armstrong struck out seven in his compete game victory.

The Jackets belted out 20 hits in a 15-5 victory over East Knox on May 9.

McPeek smoked three doubles and a single to lead the Jackets. Wolfe added four singles, while Deem had three and Waers and Zayden Comer had two each. Hershberger had a double and Gorsuch, Zach Busenburg, Holton and Beck had one single each.

Wolfe started on the hill for MV, fanning seven in five innings of work. Waers finished up.

Hershberger and Gorsuch combined to drive in seven runs as MV beat Johnstown, 11-2, on Monday.

Hershberger had a double and two singles while driving four runs, and Gorsuch had a triple, two singles and three RBI. Wolfe added a double and two singles, while Deem had two singles, and McPeek and Beck had one hit each.

Hershberger went the distance on the mound, striking out one.
