Mount Vernon Middle School tennis captures medals at tourney

The Mount Vernon Middle School tennis team fared well in the
Kokosing Valley Community Tennis Association tournament Saturday at Mount Vernon
Nazarene University’s Ramser Courts.
The Yellow Jackets captured one gold and three silvers in
the round-robin tournament with Watkins Memorial and Zanesville.

The second flight doubles team of Gabby Schemrich and Taylor
Staats won both of their matches to capture gold. The duo beat Watkins, 8-4,
and then defeated Zanesville, 8-3.
The first flight doubles team of Michael Cheng and Jason Cheng
pulled in a silver for MV, falling in a hard-fought, 9-8 (4) decision to
Watkins, but then coming back to beat Zanesville’s Amanda Martin and Mount
Vernon’s James Clymer, 8-1.
MV captured silver in two singles events – second and third
flight. Vincent Jiang was second in second flight, beating Zanesville, 8-5, but
falling to Watkins, 8-0. Weston Anderson won silver at third singles for MV,
falling 9-8 (5) to Watkins but beating Zanesville, 8-3.
At first flight singles, Adam Lawhon lost his match to
Watkins, 8-1.
The tournament featured two other flights of doubles’
competition – all involving Mount Vernon players.
The team of Eleanor Goodman and Annie Pursel won the third
flight, winning by scores of 8-4 and 8-6. Renee Hurley and Chloe Castle were
second in that flight, winning 9-8 (5) over the team of Ian Ryals and Gus
Kohler.

In fourth flight, Patrick Emig and Chloe Durbin teamed up to
win their matches, 8-6, 8-1, and capture gold. Emery Virostek and Emily
Pelletier beat Zelle Marx and Mira Jedlinsky, 8-2, to capture silver.
