West Holmes track teams excel at West Side Classic
Girls finish fourth, boys fifth in meet near Zanesville with standout performances in shot put and relay events

The West Holmes girls track & field team began its season at the West Side Classic at Muskingum Athletic Complex near Zanesville March 28, finishing fourth in the team standings.
Mallory Marmet wasted no time in making waves to begin the season. The junior’s throw of 32 feet, 1½ inches was good enough for second in the shot, but she saved her best for the discus, where she fired off a throw of 106-1 to win the title.

Saige Krownapple took home a fourth-place finish in the discus with a toss of 74-4½. Lilli Brown cleared 4-6 in the high jump, taking second, losing out on the gold on misses. Brown also claimed fifth in the 100 hurdles with a time of 21.69.
In the running events, the team of Sophie Arnold, Breslyn Brown, Tayler Wasson and Camryn Cunningham grabbed a win in the 4x800 relay. Katherine Kaster got nipped at the wire in the 1,600, settling for second in 5:30.26, just a half-second behind champion Erin Hogue of Tri-Valley. Serenity McClintock took sixth in 7:17.52. Like Kaster, Iriel Mena got inched out at the wire, finishing second in the 800 in 2:30.11, 0.4 seconds behind Hogue. McClintock placed sixth in 3:19.72. Breslyn Brown finished third in the 400 in 1:06.4, with teammate Chelsi Cooper placing sixth in 1:17.6. She also finished fourth in the 200 in 29.69. Arnold chugged her way to victory in the 3200, winning in a time of 13:02.21, well ahead of the pack.
Boys track & field
West Holmes opened its season at the West Side Classic at Muskingum Athletic Complex near Zanesville March 28, claiming fifth place in the team standings.
Maddax Graham and Cheston Cooper got the season off and running in style by grabbing first and second, respectively, in the shot put. Graham won the event with a throw of 42 feet, 6 inches, while Cooper took runner-up with a toss of 38-5.
Graham wasn’t done making his mark, earning first place in the discus with a heave of 145-7. Charlie Cooper took fifth with a throw of 102-10.

Marshall Yoder claimed seventh in the long jump with an effort of 18-6.
In the running events, the quartet of Yoder, Garrett Obrst, Cody Gallion and Malachi Craft raced to third in the 4x200 relay in 1:38.16. In the 1,600, Jimmy Wengerd took fourth in 5:17.18 while teammate Owen Mallasch claimed sixth in 5:25.10. Teammates Brady Carter, Seth Lowe, Cole Wisengarber and Gallion earned fourth place in the 4x100 relay in 51.24. Yoder wouldn’t be denied in the 300 hurdles, roaring to victory in 42.85. Wengerd flew to a fourth-place finish in the 800 in 2:25.9, while Craft garnered a bronze medal effort in the 200 in 23.39. Mallasch claimed fourth in the 3200 in 11:46.95.
