Sugarcreek Fire Department secures $12K grant for new ambulance equipment

Council also reviews annexation of Skyline School, Maple Street utility projects, animal ordinance concerns, and upcoming Red Cross smoke detector initiative.

Sugarcreek Mayor Walt Wilson announced at the Sugarcreek Village Council meeting on Sept. 8 that the fire department has received a grant for $12,110 from the Reeves Foundation to purchase scales for the stretchers on the new ambulance. Council approved spending the grant funds to purchase scales.

Solicitor Doug Frautschy said the annexation of Skyline School was expected to be approved by the county commissioners at the Sept. 8 meeting. Frautschy plans to visit the courthouse to confirm the action was taken by the commissioners. He will draw up an ordinance for consideration at the Sept. 22 council meeting. Village officials will coordinate with the county map office to assign an address to the school once the ordinance is approved by council.

Council also did the following:

—Heard the Maple Street water lines are finished except for the connection at Church Street. The sewer lines are completed. The storm drain at Skyline Drive has a temporary repair until quotes are received to make permanent repairs.

—Heard a project for Maple and Church streets' water and storm sewer improvements will begin in 2026 at an estimated cost of $774,900 and funded by a grant of $347,155, a loan from the Ohio Public Works Commission for $148,781 and a local share of $278,964.

—Heard from Assistant Fire Chief Cody Shetler that three patients have received blood products and two of the three survived. The department has assisted five other departments in establishing their own blood program.

—Heard a concern about small animals running loose on a resident’s property. Village Administrator Kevin Kaser said there is an ordinance that prohibits animals from running loose. The property owner will be contacted.

—Learned an employee of an asphalt company that does work in the village said the village is the best place to come and work on the streets.

—Heard curb strips at 111 Dover Road NE and 140 N. Mill St. need to be mowed.

—Heard a house at the Y on Main Street and state Route 39 has been demolished. The new owner plans to construct a new house at the site in the future.

—Passed two ordinances, by emergency, to approve 2026 temporary appropriations and 2026 fund levy temporary appropriations.

—Heard the cymbal player at the cuckoo clock is not working. Freeman Mullet is checking into the concern.

Other information

The Red Cross will be in the village Oct. 22 and 23. It will place door hangers on Ronson, Maple and Main streets to offer free smoke detectors to residents. A member of the fire department will accompany them.

The fire department is having a raffle for two e-bikes. Tickets are $20 and are available at the fire department and Sugar Valley Bicycle Shop. The drawing will be held Oct. 11 at the fire department’s open house event.

The next meeting will be held Sept. 22 at 7 p.m. at 410 S. Broadway in Sugarcreek. A street committee meeting will be held at 5:45 p.m., followed by a finance, personnel and audit committee meeting at 6 p.m. before the regular council meeting, which was changed from Sept. 15.
