Austin Weaver of Sugarcreek Fire and Rescue presented a new automated external defibrillator to Sugarcreek Village Council at the Monday, Oct. 20 meeting. The device will be available in the village hall and cost $1,400.
"The AED is smaller than in the past and has paddles on the bottom and is battery-operated,” Weaver said.
Village Administrator Kevin Kaser said work is continuing on Maple Street.
The project will include constructing ADA-compliant sidewalks, curb ramps, drive aprons, curb and gutters, and storm drains. The brick street from Maple Street to Church Street SW to South Broadway Street will be replaced.
“We are requesting a base coat of asphalt be applied before winter,” Kaser said.
Council also did the following:
—Passed an ordinance on the third reading to enter into a one-year agreement with the Tuscarawas County Public Defenders Commission.
—Held the second reading of an ordinance authorizing extension of a contract with W.E. Quicksall and Associates, Inc. for professional engineering services for the village.
—Held the second reading of an ordinance authorizing the village to enter into an agreement with the Tuscarawas County commissioners for housing prisoners.
—Held the second reading of an ordinance authorizing the mayor and fiscal officer to enter into contracts for providing fire protection and ambulance services for Sugarcreek, Auburn, Clark and Walnut Creek townships for 2026. The ordinance could not be passed as an emergency, as two council members were absent. Council needs five "yes" votes to suspend the rules and then a majority to pass the ordinance as an emergency.
—Held the second reading of an ordinance setting salaries for elected officials and employees from Dec. 22, 2025, to Dec. 20, 2026.
—Held the first reading of an ordinance accepting the application for annexation of territory owned by Skyline Meadows School.
—Gave a first reading to an ordinance clarifying, updating and adopting employment policies for employees of the village.
The next council meeting will be held Nov. 3 at 7 p.m. at 410 S. Broadway in Sugarcreek. A personnel committee meeting will be held at 6:45 p.m.
