Corn on the cob: The great equalizer
Carrollton High names January students of the month
As students of the month, both are eligible for a $500 scholarship provided by McFadden Insurance Co.
Carrollton High School has named Duval Citro and Dayana Ramirez-Medina as its students of the month for January.
Citro, of Carrollton, is the son of Elisha Citro and Jake Citro. Ramirez-Medina, of Dellroy, is the daughter of Blos and Nataly Ramirez-Cruz.
What extracurricular activities are you involved in both in and out of school?
Citro: Boys varsity soccer and boys volleyball — National Honor Society — CES mentors — Youth to Youth. Ramirez-Medina: None.
Do you have any special hobbies?
Citro: I play drums at my church, First Christian Church of Malvern. I also play soccer and boys volleyball. Ramirez-Medina: Listening to music — braiding my sisters’ hair — cleaning — helping others — and learning more English.
Where do you plan to attend college?
Citro: I am committed and enrolled at Kent State University. Ramirez-Medina: If possible, I would like to go to the University of Toledo — if not, Buckeye Career Center.
What are your career plans?
Citro: I am enrolled at Kent State for mechanical engineering. I hope to earn my bachelor’s degree. Ramirez-Medina: If I attend the University of Toledo, I’m going for an OB-GYN career — and if I attend Buckeye Career Center, I’m going for the nursing program.
What teacher, coach, family member or special friend has influenced you and why?
Citro: Somebody that has been a huge influence on me is my soccer coach and youth pastor, Tanner Goss. He always pushes me to my potential and has taught me how to be a better captain for my soccer team and a better leader. Ramirez-Medina: My parents and Mrs. Hutchison. My parents, because they have been in every step I’ve taken, guiding me to the right path. Mrs. Hutchison, because she has made me brave and capable of things I never thought I was going to do.
What advice can you give for success in life?
Citro: Don’t let yesterday take up too much of today. Ramirez-Medina: Focus on cultivating a positive, growth-oriented mindset — define your goals clearly — be empathetic and disciplined — and take care of your physical and mental well-being so you can enjoy the process without sacrificing your happiness.
As students of the month, both are eligible for a $500 scholarship provided by McFadden Insurance Co. to one boy and one girl at the conclusion of the school year. The seniors are selected by staff, and their photos will be displayed in the commons at the high school.
