Winter Reading Challenge, programs continue at Orrville Public Library

The library’s winter offerings include reading incentives, preschool activities, mystery discussions, technology classes and crafts for all ages through February.

Orrville Public Library is offering a Winter Reading Challenge and a variety of free programs for children, teens and adults throughout January and February including educational classes, book discussions and hands-on activities.

Orrville Public Library continues to offer a variety of programs for all ages, beginning with its Winter Reading Challenge, “A Good Book Is Like a Sweet Treat,” which runs through Jan. 31. Participants of all ages can track their reading on a paper log sheet or online through Beanstack, earning additional chances to win prizes the more they read. Those in need of reading material may call the library at 330-683-1065, and staff will pull books for pickup at the library’s drive-up window.

Families with children age 2-5 are invited to attend the Preschool Play Lab Wednesday, Jan. 21. Offered twice each month, the program features several hands-on activity stations in the children’s department. Older and younger siblings also are welcome. The Play Lab runs from 1:30-4:30 p.m., with no registration required. Additional sessions are scheduled Feb. 4 and 18 and March 4 and 18.

Mystery Monday sessions will resume Jan. 26 with a discussion of the podcast “Paper Ghosts Season 2: Burned,” which examines the July 4 weekend deaths of a family in Bethel, Ohio in 1981. This free series is open to age 19 and older and is geared toward those who enjoy mysteries and true crime. Future meetings include Feb. 23, featuring “A Hunger to Kill” by Kim Mager; March 16, with a speaker from the Orrville Police Department; and a wrap-up session April 20. No registration is required.

Registration is underway for the next Bits & Bytes program, scheduled for Tuesday, Jan. 27 at 5:30 p.m. in the library’s lower-level meeting room. The session will focus on Google Docs, a free, web-based word-processing program. Registration can be completed through the library’s website calendar at www.orrville.lib.oh.us or by calling the information desk at 330-683-1065. The program is offered in partnership with Massillon Public Library.

Teen readers in sixth grade through 12th grade can register through Jan. 24 for the next Teen Book Box, which includes a customized selection of books along with treats and trinkets. The program is offered every other month, and registration is required each time. Boxes will be available for pickup the week of Feb. 2. Registration is available through the library’s website calendar or by calling the information desk.

The library’s monthly Cookbook Club will meet Monday, Feb. 2 at 6 p.m. In anticipation of the Super Bowl Feb. 8, the theme will focus on tailgating favorites, using “Tailgating Essentials Cookbook” or “Tailgating Done Right Cookbook,” both by Anne Schaeffer. Copies of the cookbooks are available at the circulation desk. Participants are encouraged to prepare one or two dishes to share, potluck style. No registration is required.

Coffee & Crafts will continue through a partnership with the Orrville YMCA Thursday, Feb. 5. Participants will learn how to create simple paper roses from old maps. The program is designed for age 16 and older and will be held at 6 p.m. in the lower-level meeting room. All supplies are provided. Registration for this free program will begin Jan. 22 and can be completed online or by contacting the information desk.
