Wayne County Civil War Round Table program set for April 4

Medina County Treasurer John Burke to present on Jim Smith's Revolutionary War role

The Wayne County Civil War Round Table will host a free April 4 program in Wooster featuring Medina County Treasurer John Burke discussing Revolutionary War figure Jim Smith.

The Wayne County Civil War Round Table will host a program at 1 p.m. April 4 at the Wayne County Historical Society schoolhouse, 546 E. Bowman St., Wooster.

The free program will feature Medina County Treasurer John Burke presenting “Jim Smith (Part 2), Prisoner of the Ohio Indians." After participating in the French and Indian War and his escape from being a captive of the Native Americans, Smith returned home and became involved in politics.

The presentation will explore Smith’s role as a militia officer during the Revolutionary War including his service with Gen. George Washington at the Battle of White Plains and his involvement in Gen. McIntosh’s campaign to build Fort Laurens, the first fort in the Ohio country.

Burke, a longtime local historian, is a lifelong resident of Medina County whose ancestry traces back to the first pioneers of Valley City. His family includes veterans of the Civil War, the Spanish-American War and World War II.
