Local author Susan Edinger to speak at DAR and Wayne County Historical Society event Sept. 15

Wooster program at the Historical Society schoolhouse will highlight Edinger’s book “Freedom Friends” and her family’s ties to the Underground Railroad.

The Daughters of the American Revolution Wooster-Wayne Chapter, in partnership with the Wayne County Historical Society, will host a free program Sept. 15 at 6:30 p.m. at the Wayne County Historical Society schoolhouse, located on the Wayne County Historical Society campus at 546 E. Bowman St. in Wooster.

The program will feature Susan Edinger, author of “Freedom Friends.”

Anna Clarinda makes a surprise discovery when she overhears voices coming from the downstairs summer kitchen. Was a bow tie quilt used as a signal to runaway slaves? How can she help the runaways escape to freedom? The book is based on a true story in Westerville.

Edinger, a local author, will talk about her family's history in the Underground Railroad. She is a retired elementary school teacher who has read thousands of books to her students, her three children and now her five grandchildren. She lives in Millersburg with her husband Joe. In her spare time, she makes quilts and has a small soap-making business.

Edinger’s mother passed along to her the joy that comes with keeping family history alive, as well as her love of quilt making.
