Nine out of 10 people who suffer cardiac arrest outside the hospital don’t survive. To help change this sobering statistic, the American Heart Association has an urgent call to action: fundraise, learn CPR and take action to save lives.
To join the association’s lifesaving mission, individuals and teams can register to participate in the 2025 Wayne County Heart Walk, which will take place Thursday, Sept. 25 at 5 p.m. at Kean Elementary/Kinney Fields.
In addition to raising critical funds, the Wayne County Heart Walk will bring together heart disease and stroke survivors, as well as participants from dozens of local companies, to unite in the mission to save lives. Every walker who joins the Heart Walk and every dollar donated means more people will be trained in lifesaving CPR, more research will be conducted and more lifesaving moments will be achieved for everyone.
"We envision a future where at least one person in every household knows CPR," said Jody Starcher, volunteer co-chair of this year’s Heart Walk. “By joining the American Heart Association’s Heart Walk, you are helping to turn our community from bystanders into lifesavers, ensuring that when a cardiac emergency occurs, there is someone ready to step in and make a difference."
“My dad passed away from a heart attack when he was only 32 years old, so this is near and dear to my heart,” said Sue Smail, co-chair. “We want to empower our community to know CPR so they can be a vital link in the chain of survival.”
