With the holiday season upon us, the excitement of giving loved ones a special gift can create joyful and lasting memories.

The idea of placing an adorable puppy or kitten under the Christmas tree sounds heartwarming, and many children include cuddly pets on their wish lists. But impulsively buying a pet can quickly become overwhelming and time-consuming once the novelty wears off, sometimes leading to heartbreaking consequences for both the animal and the new owners.

Owning a pet should be a lifetime commitment. Families should consider and discuss many factors before bringing home or gifting a pet. The financial aspect is often overlooked. Expenses include routine feeding, grooming, regular veterinary visits, unexpected medical emergencies, boarding, doggie day care or hiring a pet sitter if the owner works away from home, travels frequently or takes annual vacations.

Medina County SPCA Director of Operations Sarah Urquhart offers suggestions for those considering pet ownership.

“(We encourage) families to adopt rather than shop when looking for a family pet,” she said. “There are many factors and responsibilities involved in taking proper care of a pet."

Kittens and puppies grow up, and with that comes the need for an environment and living conditions conducive for the pet to thrive in. Pets enjoy the companionship and attention of their owners throughout their lifetime. Puppies and dogs need to be walked and exercised regardless of daily weather conditions.

Cats need their litter boxes changed and kept clean. Some cats are very independent; some are lap sitters wanting a lot of their owners’ attention. There are many accessories that go along with pet ownership and keeping your four-legged family members happy for the duration of their life, along with maintaining a daily feeding routine.

As pets age, they may require senior care, additional vet visits, supplements and medications. Their needs will likely increase.

Veterinary care is vital for a healthy pet, and pet insurance is often a good idea, especially for puppies. Dogs can live 10-15 years or more, and cats often reach 15-20 years with proper care. A loving and committed owner should be prepared to care for a pet throughout its lifetime. SPCA understands that life changes sometimes make it impossible to continue caring for a pet.

Urquhart said: “If you have weighed out all the reasons that you are prepared and ready to adopt ... we are happy to help with this easy adoption process."

For those not ready to adopt but wanting to help, volunteering is encouraged. It’s a valuable way for young people or future pet owners to understand what caring for an animal truly involves. Those unable to volunteer can support the SPCA by attending fundraising events or donating to help keep the animals comfortable and fed until they find their forever homes.
