The Medina County Health Department is urging residents to review their measles vaccination status and stay informed about prevention with three cases reported in Cuyahoga County .
Measles is a highly contagious viral illness that can cause fever, rash, cough, runny nose and red, watery eyes. In some cases, it can lead to serious complications such as ear infections, pneumonia, swelling of the brain and, in rare instances, death. Ohio confirmed 40 measles cases statewide in 2025, highlighting the importance of continued vigilance.
Health officials emphasize that vaccination remains the most effective protection against measles. The measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine is safe and highly effective, with two doses providing about 97% protection and long-lasting immunity. Most people born before 1957 were naturally exposed to measles and are considered protected, but others are encouraged to confirm their vaccination history with a health care provider.
Although the U.S. recently announced an updated childhood immunization schedule that reduces the number of recommended shots, the measles vaccine remains a required and strongly recommended immunization for children. Health officials note that rising measles cases worldwide and nationally make vaccination especially important.
The Medina County Health Department continues to monitor measles activity throughout the region and is coordinating with regional partners. There are currently no confirmed measles cases in Medina County.
