If you are a student preparing for college, or a parent supporting that journey, completing the FAFSA, or Free Application for Federal Student Aid, is a critical step in securing financial support. College Now is offering free workshops to answer questions and help with completing the application before the June 30 deadline for the 2026-27 academic year.
The Medina County District Library will host the workshop Thursday, Feb. 12, from 5:30-7:30 p.m. College Now career advisers will answer questions and walk participants through the FAFSA step by step. Those who complete the application at the event will receive two tickets to a University of Akron men’s Zips basketball game, while supplies last.
Participants should bring 2024 federal tax forms, Social Security numbers, a cellphone and a laptop to the workshop. Computers will also be available for use.
Other dates and locations for workshops include:
• Feb. 11, 5:30-7:30 p.m., Akron Public Library, Norton Branch
• Feb. 18, 6-7 p.m., Stark County Library, North Branch
• Feb. 25, 5:30-7:30 p.m., Akron Public Library, Main Branch
• March 4, 6-8 p.m., Willowick Public Library
Completing the FAFSA is essential for obtaining a federal Pell Grant, which could be worth up to $7,395 for those who qualify. Many colleges and states also use the FAFSA when making financial aid decisions. Adult learners, not just high school students, should also complete the application.
College Now Greater Cleveland is a nonprofit organization founded in 1967 to increase postsecondary education attainment through career advising, financial aid counseling and scholarships. The organization provides free services to about 42,000 individuals across Northeast Ohio each year.
In Medina County, College Now contracts with Brunswick, Buckeye, Cloverleaf, Highland and Wadsworth high schools. Advisers at those schools can provide more information about the FAFSA. These workshops are open to students from any high school, homeschooled students and adult learners.
Attendees are encouraged, but not required, to register for the workshops at cngc.org/events. The website also provides information about other college financial aid programs and scholarships.
