CES Credit Union and Knox County Recycling and Litter Prevention are cooperating for a Shred Day on Saturday May 16. Volunteers will accept personal documents and mail for secure destruction on-site for no cost.

In 2025, CES Credit Union’s Shred Day safely destroyed approximately six tons of documents and kept the materials out of landfills.

The event is at the Knox County Service Center parking lot on East Chestnut Street at N. McKenzie Street in Mount Vernon. Hours are 9:30-11:30 a.m., although the event could end earlier if the truck is filled. There is no cost, and up to five boxes of personal documents will be shredded onsite by licensed and bonded contractors. The event is open to all households, and you do not have to be a member of the credit union or live in Knox County to participate.

Please note the following:

• Staples and paper clips may remain on the documents to be shredded.

• Remove all large binder clips and three-ring binders.

• No wet or moldy documents will be accepted.

• Boxes should be approximately the size of a bankers' box or copier paper box. Avoid using trash bags that could tear.

• Not intended for business use.

• Verify no foreign or metal items like tools, scissors, pliers, etc. are included with the documents to be shredded.

Documents suggested to be shredded include:

• Old personal financial (bank or credit union) statements, especially those over seven years old.

• Old tax documents, especially those over seven years old.

• Old and unnecessary receipts and bills with your name, address and account number showing.

• Expired policies.
