How many high school seniors do you know who rank first academically in a graduating class of 294, compete in four grueling triathlons each summer and are focused on a career as a financial planner?
Meet Lucy Rush, Mount Vernon High School’s nominee for the Walter All-Scholastic Award. Each ESC in Ohio selects a senior for the honor, named for Ohio’s 31st state superintendent of public instruction.
Rush has a 4.732 grade-point average. Her high school transcript includes courses completed through Kenyon College, Mount Vernon Nazarene University, Cedarville University and Central Ohio Technical College.
An accomplished runner, she was the Licking County League Cross Country Runner of the Year in 2024 and 2025 and First Team All-Ohio in cross country last year. In October she set a MVHS 5K record of 17:43.13 at the Licking County League meet.
Rush’s academic and athletic achievements, as well as her career goal, have a common root.
“As a Christian, my faith motivates my view on all aspects of life and this is irrevocably tied to what my goals are,” she wrote in the essay that accompanied her Walter Award application.
“As a student, I want to use my learning to see God in the world around me and better love what he created. As a financial planner, I want to help people see money as a tool entrusted by God for stewardship, not a treasure in and of itself. As a runner, I devote myself to excellence and hard work to develop the skills God has given me.”
A Mount Vernon student since kindergarten, Rush attended Wiggin Street Elementary. Her great grandfather and grandparents graduated there when the building was a high school.
Her mother, Dr. Kelly Rush, is a professor of finance at Mount Vernon Nazarene University.
A National Merit Scholarship finalist, Rush earned Kiwanis academic awards for algebra and calculus. She was a member of the marching band and serves as treasurer of National Honor Society.
Guidance counselor Jacqueline Wihl struggles to find enough superlatives to describe Rush.
“Lucy is the most humble student I have ever worked with,” Wihl said. “I can’t begin to sum up all of the respect I have for her. She is a remarkable student, always forward-thinking. She knows what she wants to achieve and she goes for it with fantastic support from her family.”
Rush is enrolled at Cedarville University, where she will major in finance and participate in NCAA Div. II cross country.
Starting in May she will participate in four spring-summer Junior Elite Triathlons in Wisconsin, Virginia, Pittsburgh and Cincinnati. Each involves 750 meters swimming, 20k biking and 5k running.
She has competed in the annual triathlons since 2024.
“As a runner, my immediate goals are to break 5 minutes in the 1600 meters and 11 minutes in the 3200 meters,” Rush said. “However, my long-term goals are to maintain my love for the sport. I hope to never lose the sense of freedom and contentment I feel after a run…”
While she has specific academic, athletic and professional goals, Rush said character outweighs accomplishments.
“I desire to not be motivated by pride to have the best degree, career or fastest times,” she said. “My goal is to live out my calling as a child of God, not to be defined by the things that I do, but have confidence in who I am.
“This is my greatest and most important goal.”
