A local initiative is using music to provide healing, connection and purpose for veterans.
Strings of Valor, a Mount Vernon-based effort, places donated guitars into the hands of veterans while also providing free music lessons. The goal is simple — offer a creative outlet for those who have carried more than their share of life’s burdens.
Through the program, organizers hope music can serve as a form of therapy.
“Music has the unique ability to calm the nervous system and help process unspoken experiences,” organizers said. “It can restore a sense of purpose and joy.”
Each donated guitar is first sent to a luthier for cleaning and any necessary repairs. Once ready, the instrument is given to a veteran along with complimentary lessons, creating a pathway for both skill development and personal expression.
Lessons are held at Owens Music in downtown Mount Vernon, where volunteers work directly with participants.
The program is currently seeking guitar donations from community members who may have unused instruments at home.
“Do you have a guitar gathering dust?” organizers ask. “You can change the life of a veteran through music.”
Strings of Valor is also looking for volunteers willing to teach lessons and share their musical knowledge.
Guitar drop-offs can be scheduled at e-Merge Real Estate Champions, 110A Coshocton Ave. in Mount Vernon.
For more information or to donate, contact Mickey Cochran at 614-578-4017 or call 740-627-1544 to arrange a drop-off.
Through one chord at a time, Strings of Valor hopes to make a lasting impact — helping veterans find healing, connection and a renewed sense of purpose.
