Different day, same fun in downtown Mount Vernon
The Mount Vernon Community Band entertained the audience at the July First Friday event in downtown Mount Vernon.

This July First Friday was a little different than other ones since it happened to be on the Fourth of July so they moved it to a Thursday. But that didn’t stop anyone from having all the same amount of fun. Bringing all its usual stuff: Food trucks, vendors, live entertainment by New Mother Nature, face painting and a kids zone, and of course the car show.
“I try to bring my Jeep down every First Friday. I love Halloween and I love seeing the kids get excited when they see it. Everyone in my family is huge Christmas fans but I have always held an extra special place in my heart for Halloween. It's my favorite holiday and I wish it was year round,” said Sandy Littleton, owner of the Halloween-themed Jeep.
The Mount Vernon Community Band brought out the independence day jams, something both the visitors and the members of the band could enjoy.
“I play in the Mount Vernon Community Band. I joined when I moved down here from Texas. My daughter did it first. It has been a lot of fun to be able to play in the band again since it was something I enjoyed from childhood. And the fact we got to pay for First Friday was really cool,” Molly Debuse said.
The First Friday events have become the thing to do for community members, and even those just visiting Knox County.
“When I am able to get the day off for a First Friday that is sure where you will find me. It has so many different things to look at and do. I love seeing our community get together and have fun. All the kids' smiling faces are just a plus. I also sometimes end up running into people I haven't seen in a while, which it's nice to catch up with them,” Matt Rogers said.
“I no longer live in Ohio but when I come to visit my daughter I always make sure it's at the beginning of the month so we can go to First Friday. We used to go all the time when I lived here and I love all the interesting stuff they do,” Jennifer Cooper said.
Don’t miss next month's First Friday as we are entering the dog days of summer. Or one could say August is going to the dogs. Bring your pets and come out for the pet costume contest and the pet parade. The event will be Friday, Aug. 1, from 6-9 p.m. in downtown Mount Vernon.
