Danville boys basketball rolls to three wins, stays in KMAC title hunt
Blue Devils defeated East Knox, Lucas and Mount Gilead, earning coach Matt Proper’s 200th career victory along the way
Fueled by a loud, full house of supporters, the Danville boys’ basketball team cruised to a 63-41 victory over rival East Knox on Jan. 9.
The Blue Devils gave that crowd plenty to cheer for in the first quarter, racing out to a 21-8 lead. They extended the lead to 34-17 at halftime and rolled to the victory.
Owen Gronberg led the Devils with 18 points, including three 3-pointers. Parker Proper sank four 3-pointers en route to 16 points, while Wesley Payne had 10 points. Carson Proper checked in with seven and Ashton Spaulding had six as the Devils finished the first half of the Knox Morrow Athletic Conference schedule in second place.
The Blue Devils followed that up with a 65-22 victory over Lucas on Jan. 10.
Danville jumped out to a 24-6 lead after one quarter and pushed it to 45-14 at halftime.
Aidan Mickley led four scorers in double figures with 12 points. Brycen Burke and Spaulding each had 11, while Parker Proper had 10.
The victory was coach Matt Proper’s 200th career coaching victory.
In a battle for second place in the KMAC, the Devils and Mount Gilead needed some extra time to determine the outcome.
Danville trailed by nine at halftime but came back to force overtime and then beat the Indians, 64-62.
The victory kept the Devils in second place, just one game behind league-leading Fredericktown.
Mickley had a career night for the Devils, pouring in 25 points to lead the team. Parker Proper added 13, while Payne had eight, and Carson Proper and Spaulding each had six.
