Centerburg teams trade wins across bowling, basketball action

Trojans split matches on the lanes, girls basketball stays atop KMAC, boys face tough stretch on the court

The Centerburg bowling teams each won one and lost one during the week.

The Centerburg girls’ bowling team picked up a hard-fought, 1,072-1,064, victory over Utica on Jan. 7.

Jaelyn Caldwell and Azala Compton each shot 238 to lead the Trojans. Caldwell had games of 100-138, while Compton fired games of 125-113.

The boys’ team wasn’t so fortunate, falling 2,013-1,925 to the Redskins.

Shawn Carter led the Trojans with a 392 series (232-160). Zack G fired a 358 (171-187), while Michael Wallace shot 341 (176-165) and Luke P 316 (159-157).

The Trojans then split their match with host Fredericktown on Jan. 8.

The boys’ squad cruised to a 1,751-1,641 victory over the Freddies.

Wallace led CHS with a 378 series (167-211), while Zack Garloch shot 316 (143-173).

Centerburg’s girls’ team fell to Fredericktown, 1,481-1,068.

Compton fired games of 134-175 (309 series) to pace the Trojans. Ryleigh Stephens rolled a 214 series (147-67).

Girls’ basketball

Centerburg jumped on Danville early and cruised to a 54-37 victory on Jan. 10.

The Trojans (9-2, 7-2) outscored the Devils 16-2 in the first quarter and never looked back. They remain in first place in the Knox Morrow Athletic Conference.

Kenlee Fairall led the Trojans with 22 points, eight steals and four rebounds. Tiara Sheppard added 21 points, five steals, for rebounds, three blocks and three assists, while Stella Sands had six points and four rebounds, and Lauren Ellis had seven rebounds, six steals and three assists. 

Boys’ basketball

Centerburg was shut down all night on Jan. 9, falling 62-9 to rival Fredericktown.

The Trojans trailed 16-4 after one quarter and 40-6 at halftime.

Steffan Sands led the Trojans with five points, three rebounds and two steals. Hayden Love added four points, while Drew Trout pulled down six rebounds and handed out two assists.

The fourth quarter proved costly to the Trojans on Jan. 13, as they fell 47-39 to Northmor.

Centerburg led 30-26 after three quarters but watched the Knights score 21 in the final frame and grab the victory.

Brody Cole led the Trojans with 15 points. Trout added 10, while Love and Sands each had seven.
