Local first responders recently welcomed veterans to the Greystone Event Center for a luncheon to celebrate their service to the nation. The event honored their sacrifice and allowed them to reconnect with friends and share stories about their experiences in Vietnam.

In tribute to those who bravely served the nation, the Wayne County Veterans Service Commission recently hosted a special luncheon, Echoes of Honor, at the Greystone Event Center in Wooster to pay tribute to Vietnam veterans.
During the Vietnam War, which spanned from 1955-75, many brave individuals from Wayne County answered the call of duty, leaving their homes and families behind to serve in a conflict that altered the landscape of American history and their lives.
“We have approximately 7,800 veterans in Wayne County,” said Commission Director Jeff Shull, who is retired from the U.S. Navy. “When I became director in 2019, I had a wish list of things I wanted to do, and as long as I am in this position, we will continue to celebrate their service.”
Shull is adopting an ongoing commitment to honor veterans and create a culture of appreciation and support that lasts all year round.
“Last year we did a Welcome Home event because that was something many Vietnam veterans never received,” Shull said. “Later on, we will honor Korean War veterans. That is something that has never been done in Wayne County.”
