Those interested in working for the City of Dover this summer can apply now. Mayor Shane Gunnoe said a number of positions will need to be filled in multiple departments including parks and recreation, street, electric generation, water/wastewater, and cemetery.
“Summer employees who are lifeguards can earn $12 per hour, and we have in-house training for lifeguards,” Gunnoe said. “Summer employees in other departments can earn $10.75 an hour.”
Applications can be returned to the mayor’s or service director’s offices.
Council reviewed the 2024 parks and recreation yearly report. The park hosted a variety of activities last year including church softball, women’s bocce, women’s volleyball, co-ed volleyball and high school boys fall basketball. The park also hosts boys baseball and girls softball games.
A youth basketball camp, in memory of Philip Yontz, was held last July for three days.
Summer activities included tennis lessons, cheerleading camp, swim lessons, baseball camp, soccer camp, football camp and dance camp. Disc golf also continues to be popular.
Council also reviewed the annual reports from the electric field division and the general services department.
Gunnoe congratulated Auditor Nicole Stoldt and her department for an award they received from the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada. The City of Dover was awarded the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting. It is the highest form of recognition in governmental accounting and financial reporting.
Gunnoe attended a groundbreaking ceremony for the Iron 24 townhomes project on Iron Avenue near the hospital last week. Construction is expected to begin in April.
The city will again provide a yard waste drop-off site. “I'm happy to report the city has received a grant in the amount of $19,638 from the Stark-Tusc-Wayne Solid Waste District to fund a portion of the cost for the site,” Gunnoe said.
The board of control will meet soon to consider entering into a contract for the design and engineering of the new traffic signal at the intersection of Crown Road and Wooster Avenue.
“This is the final public project related to the Schaeffler expansion to the city and the improvement of Crown Road,” Gunnoe said.
In an update on the police department, they have ordered their new in-car camera, interview recording and body camera systems. The department also is finalizing prices on their new duty weapons and tasers.
Safety Director Bob Everett said the police department will trade in their current service weapons to a licensed gun dealer. No weapons will be sold.
General services will order an additional 1,000 tons of salt to refill the city stockpile.
“This will last the city not only through this winter, but well into next winter as well,” Gunnoe said. “They have also ordered the new safety lights required for their vehicles and authorized in the budget.”
From Jan. 1 through Dec. 31, 2024, the city used 1,042.5 tons of salt.
The parks department has ordered a replacement boiler for Memorial Hall. The old unit was nearly 30 years old.
Gunnoe recently attended the American Public Power Association Legislative Rally in Washington, D.C.
“Items discussed included the urgent need for permitting reform related to electric generation, grid reliability in future years and grant funding opportunities,” Gunnoe said.
The Dover Community Blood Drive will be held March 11 from 2:30-5 p.m. at the city park near the tennis courts. Information about scheduling an appointment is on the city's Facebook page or website. Participants will be entered into a drawing to win one of two gift cards.
In legislation council approved Ordinance 6-25 approving participation in the EcoSmart Choice Program, which provides for the purchase of green/renewable power to those who choose to participate.
After approving Resolution 1-25, thanking Steve Valentine for his service in the electric field department, council gave Valentine a standing ovation. Council presented Valentine with the signed resolution at the end of the meeting.
The next Dover Council meeting will be March 17 in council chambers, 121 E. Second St., Dover.
