Search continues for crosswalk solution in the village

Strasburg Village Administrator Mike Rosenberry gave an update on the aluminum pole to extend over South Wooster Avenue at the Fourth Street crosswalk during the Jan. 21 meeting. At the Jan. 7 meeting, Strasburg Village Council approved $10,182 for a 20-foot aluminum pole and a 15-foot aluminum signal arm from TAPCO to be installed at the crosswalk.

“After looking at the pole that was to extend over the street, I asked if they had a different style. They do not, so I will search elsewhere,” Rosenberry said. “The pole looked too much like one that would be placed over a railroad crossing.”

Council held a special meeting Jan. 23 to pass a resolution, as an emergency, to hire Casandra Dobransky and Kevin Friend, both firefighters and EMT-Bs, at a date to be determined by Fire Chief Jason Ely. The resolution could not be passed as an emergency due to the absence of council members Wes Hostetler and Liz Dreher.

Council also did the following:

—Agreed to write a letter of approval for the Safe Route to Schools project through OMEGA for installing new sidewalks near the school.

—Heard ProVia is expanding its business north of the village. Plans are to install utilities on Harwalk Road for a future new business of another nature. This information was recently provided at a Joint Economic Development District meeting.

—Heard the village and Franklin Township will each receive an $80,000 disbursement from the Joint Economic Development District. Council member Jeff Smith suggested the village funds not be placed in the general fund but earmarked for a purpose in the village.

—Heard private donations were given to the village for revitalization, to repurpose buildings and to add landscape to the downtown area. Council member Jeff Smith said a model plan of the area, to be presented in two phases, was suggested at a total cost of $12,000. No action was taken.

—GLO/Horizon reported the police station, fire station and Village Hall are operational on fiber GLO after receiving a required permit from RJ Corman Railroad to run fiber under the railroad tracks to connect the street and water and wastewater facilities. The work should be completed by the end of February.

—Delayed approval for OMNI-Fiber’s request for a right-of-way permit to extend fiber through the village extending to every resident and business.

—Held the first reading of an ordinance enacting village codified ordinances to enact zero lot line ASF lots for new construction.

—Heard when there is a snowfall of two or more inches, residents are asked to move vehicles from the street so employees can plow.
