Project on the square in Sugarcreek is moving forward

Sugarcreek Mayor Walt Wilson told council at the June 17 meeting the project on the square is moving forward. Wilson and Village Administrator Kevin Kaser met with Alan Cottrill, the artist who made the cheesemaker sculpture, and some local cheesemakers to develop a plan where to place the sculpture on North Broadway. Cottrill agreed make plaques listing the donors and sponsors of the sculpture.

Wilson said a discussion was held about possibly of adding a pavilion at the area of the sculpture to provide seating and some shade. He said there will be a brick wall at the rear of the property, and a copper cheese kettle is being donated by Chad Schindler, of Broad Run Cheesehouse, to be placed at the site.
In other business, council
-Authorized Solicitor Doug Frautschy to draw a new ordinance for the July 1 meeting setting new rates for the water tap and connection fees, sewer tap fees and underground boring.
-Heard the economic development, parks, and recreation committee met prior to the regular council meeting to discuss pickleball courts. Mick Fanning, committee chairman, made a motion the street department will begin the excavation of the site for a pickleball court. The vote was unanimous.
-Heard several light poles at Winklepleck Grove are leaning and asked Kaser to look at the polesand several lights in the Grove that are no longer working.
-Learned the railroad crossing on US Route 39 near Edelweiss Drive have needed some repairs for a while. Wilson said the railroad officials ae not responding to telephone calls so Wilson reported the problem to the PUCO. He said a response should be coming within 24-hours.
Other information
Frautschy thanked the village, police, Lynn Dessecker, and everyone who helped to make the Fabulous 50s Fling a success. Also, Josh Jarvis, councilman, also thanked those involved.
The electric power was out during the meeting along with the internet.
The next meeting will be held July 1, at 7 p.m. 410 S. Broadway, Sugarcreek.
