Parking situation at Mill Street Diner discussed

Sugarcreek Council discussed the parking situation at the Mill Street Diner, 993 W. Main St., at the Sept. 23 meeting. Ray Owens, the diner’s owner, requested some additional parking at the site. Council agreed to add a handicapped parking place at the top of the hill and open a second parking spot at the bottom of the hill next to the diner, both on the north side of Ohio 93.
Laura Russell, Sugarcreek Library supervisor, gave an update on recent activities held at the library. The Sugarcreek Branch Library offered 35 programs, had 4,651 visitors and had 25,067 items borrowed. Program attendance was 830. Russell began duties as supervisor in January 2024.
Council also did the following:
—Passed, as an emergency, an ordinance to advertise for bids for the water department expansion project.
—Thanked the police for their fast action in apprehending an individual that broke into the Sugarcreek Pharmacy after hours.
—Tabled a decision to change the traffic pattern at Factory Street and U.S. 39. The cost would be about $30,000. The traffic light off Factory Street is a trip light, and a vehicle’s front bumper must be on the white line for it to turn green on the side street.
—Appointed Jeremy Reiger to serve on the Sugarcreek Fire Department. He is a paramedic and Level II firefighter.
—Approved a one-year police contract for coverage with the Village of Baltic. There will be a 2.4% increase in coverage to $55.60 from $53.20 per hour. Sugarcreek police patrol the village for 15 hours per week.
—Held the second reading of a resolution accepting the amounts and rates as determined by the budget commission and authorizing the necessary tax levies and certifying them to the county auditor.
—Held the first reading of an ordinance setting the salaries for elected officials and employees of the village from Dec. 23, 2024, to Dec. 21, 2025.
—Council passed an emergency ordinance stating the books of the village will not be balanced until after Jan. 1, 2025, and it is necessary to provide for the current expenses and other expenditures until such time the appropriate ordinance for 2025 can be prepared.
—Passed, as an emergency, an ordinance to make temporary appropriations for current expenses and other expenditures for the village for the year 2025.

Trick or treat will be held Oct. 26 from 3-5 p.m. Those participating should turn on a porch light, and children should be accompanied by an adult.
Council thanked the police in advance for their service at the Ohio Swiss Festival.
