Millersburg Council tables talks on rentals

Millersburg Village Council met May 28.

The following topics were discussed:

—Design and review board approved the signage for Harvest Ridge Construction at 20 W. Jackson St., signage for Millersburg Dental at 35 S. Clay St, and the fence installation at Hotel Millersburg on May 15.

—Planning and zoning approved the variance request from Habitat for Humanity for 571 Elm St. for a side yard setback, as well as reviewed a proposed parcel layout for the upcoming Steimel property sale.

—Spectrum has assigned a work order. The village is still waiting for site work to be done at the Wooster Road and Jones Street intersection.

—The Pomerene Hospital crosswalk equipment was recently delivered. The village will work with the street department on an installation date.

—The village is awaiting shipping/installation dates from GameTime for the new playground equipment at Airport Park.

—Council discussed planters versus tree cutouts in the new downtown sidewalks. Council decided on trees but using a different species and having them put where two parking spaces came together, which will allow people to get out of their vehicles on the sidewalk side.

—The proposed sidewalk layout for inside Clay Street Park was discussed. The council asked Chad Cline to bring some ideas and pricing for an ADA-compliant sidewalk going up the hill from Monroe Street. He also suggested talking to the Lutheran Church to see if it would be interested in adding a handicapped space to the end of its parking lot.

—The street department’s new F550 is in.

—The personnel committee will meet June 16 at 6:30 p.m. in the council chambers to discuss possible new council rules.

—The receiver for the Millersburg Mobile Home Park is now taking bid proposals for the purchase of the park.

—The village is still waiting on the State of Ohio to let it know if its DORA application has been approved.

—There have been multiple discussions about short-term rentals in the village. Council decided to hold off on making any decisions, as there are currently four bills pending in the state legislature regarding short-term rentals.

—The bicentennial closing ceremonies are the weekend of Saturday, June 7 and Sunday, June 8. On Saturday they will be at the Holmes Center for the Arts Theater. On Sunday there will be an old-fashioned band concert at the amphitheater in Millersburg at 2 p.m. After the band plays, Millersburg’s time capsule will be closed.

—Mayor Kelly Hoffee proposed each council member choose a specific area of focus or expertise. They could then research best practices, investigate how similar issues are addressed in other municipalities and stay informed on developments within their topic. The goal would be to ensure that when items are brought before council, council has a designated member who could speak knowledgeably and provide informed guidance. The structure would not only strengthen decision-making, but also allow each member to take ownership of initiatives and be recognized for their leadership and accomplishments in their area. The mayor asked council to think about this proposal, and it will be discussed during the June council meeting.

Council is now on its summer schedule and will meet one time per month for June, July and August. Meetings will be June 9, July 14 and Aug. 11. Council will return to its normal meeting schedule on the second and fourth Mondays of each month starting in September.
