The Tuscarawas County Public Library is offering a lineup of genealogy programs this summer for residents interested in exploring their family history, whether they’re just starting or need help overcoming research obstacles.
The series will begin with Genealogy Websites for Beginners Monday, June 2 at 6 p.m. at the Tuscarawas County Main Library in New Philadelphia. This class will introduce attendees to online tools for beginning genealogy research.
On Tuesday, June 10 at 6 p.m., the library will host Intro to Find a Grave, a class focused on navigating the popular online database. Attendees will learn how to search for headstones and contribute to online memorials.
Those eager to apply their new skills can participate in Find a Grave: Headstone Hunters, scheduled at two local cemeteries. Participants will help fulfill photo requests and contribute missing headstone information to Find a Grave. These sessions will be held June 14 at Fair Street Cemetery and July 19 at East Avenue Cemetery, both starting at 10 a.m.
“These classes are great for anyone who thinks they may be interested in researching their family history,” said Gina Merrill, public service associate. “The classes highlight the resources available at your county library to research your family tree at no cost.”
For more personalized help, the library also will offer Book a Genealogist June 4, June 25, July 16 and July 30. Participants can schedule a 90-minute appointment from 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. with a genealogy specialist for one-on-one research support.
All programs are free, but registration is required. Visit the library’s event calendar at www.tusclibrary.org or call 330-364-4474.
