Researching Your War of 1812 Ancestors is the topic of a talk to be hosted by the Holmes County Genealogical Society on Thursday, June 26.
Eric E. Johnson will explore the resources available on the internet for researching veterans of the War of 1812.
The talk will provide an opportunity to get information on how to research ancestors who fought in the War of 1812, which lasted from June 1812 until the Treaty of Ghent in December 1814.
Subjects covered will include understanding the military structure and how to use the internet for resources such as pension lists, service records, regimental histories, enlistment papers, veterans’ grave site records, and free books and message boards.
Johnson, a retired U.S. Air Force lieutenant colonel, serves as the registrar general of the General Society of the War of 1812 and as the registrar/genealogist for the Society of the War of 1812 in Ohio. He also is vice president of development for the Ohio Genealogical Society and a member of the National Society of the American Revolution and the Company of Military Historians, among others.
The presentation is open to the public and will take place at 7 p.m. in the Castle Club Banquet Center, 434 N. Washington St., Millersburg. The center is next to the Victorian House Museum.
The monthly meeting of the society will follow the talk.
