Dover City Park has hosted a farmers market since 1979. The market will open again for the summer on Thursday, July 8 and reopen every Thursday through Sept. 23 from 7:30-10:30 a.m. The market began due to the work of then-city council member Janet Comella 42 years ago.
“It’s not a really large market,” said Eva Newsome, executive assistant to Dover Mayor Rick Homrighausen. “The people who come out with things to sell have been coming to the market for many years. We like to say it’s a pretty loyal group, and I think many of them have made good friendships.”
In other words, after 42 years, the Dover Farmers Market has plenty of room to grow. “We always welcome new vendors,” Newsome said. “They are certainly welcome to bring what they may have to sell.”
Area gardeners or farmers with extra produce can come out to the market, no permit required. “Just bring your own display table,” Newsome said.
The Dover market has an unbroken string of annual appearances, remaining open through the lockdown of summer 2020. Those who either buy or sell at the market this year are asked to wear a face covering if not fully vaccinated and maintain a safe distance from others.
Though vendors with goods to sell are always welcome, there is a simple rule: with no electricity for refrigeration available, perishable items are not permitted including fresh or frozen meats, cream, custard or pumpkin pies, or home canned foods. Also unwelcome are live animals for sale. A city employee checks the market each week to be sure vendors are in compliance.
Home-grown produce is encouraged, as well as fruits and vegetables, flowers and plants, honey, and jams and jellies properly labeled with the maker’s name, phone number and date of production.
The weather has always been kind to those selling their goods. “We’ve been fortunate every year in that we’ve rarely been rained out,” Newsome said. “When it does rain, some of the vendors pack up early and go, but most stay anyway. It’s up to them.”
The Dover Farmers Market can be found at Dover City Park off North Wooster Avenue. Park restrooms and drinking fountains are available. The market is located by ball field number one.
