Dover teen leaders to host prom at senior center

Members of the Teen Leadership Corps at Dover High School will help the Tuscarawas County Senior Center in Dover to raise funds and provide an evening out for area senior citizens.
The prom theme is “Dancing through the Decades,” and the event will be held April 20 from 6-9 p.m. with doors opening at 5:30 p.m. The event will be held at the senior center at 425 Prospect St. in Dover. Tickets are $20 per person and are available until April 5 at the center. The event is open to anyone age 18 and up.
Serving on the prom committee are Dover High School students Kylie Charlton and McKenna Cook, as well as Vicki Yates, director of fund development at the senior center.
The Teen Leadership Corps is a leadership class for selected high school juniors and seniors led by teacher Brianna Sondag.
“She teaches us how to be effective and authentic leaders through different leadership skills,” said Charlton, a junior at Dover High School. “We also learn how to serve our community by arranging our own service projects. TLC has opened many opportunities for my classmates and I to connect with our community and be good role models for what leadership should look like.”
TLC contacted the senior center for the opportunity to connect with the older adult community.
“They asked us if we would be interested in doing a senior prom here, so we said, 'Why not?' Our seniors like our dances, and this is something out of the box,” Yates said. “Hopefully, it will gain momentum and maybe be an annual thing.”
Members of the senior center are excited about the event too.
“I’m already shopping for a prom dress,” Phyllis Haas of New Philadelphia said as she scrolled through online dress offerings on her phone.
Yates suggested secondhand stores might be a good place to find dresses too.
Formal attire is welcome, but it’s not required.
A prom king and queen will be crowned, hot dogs and tacos will be served, and a dessert station will be available.
Mocktails (nonalcoholic drinks) will be served. Music from the 1950s through the 1990s will be played, and a disc jockey will be provided by Poorman Productions. Members of the TLC will help with the activities and join in the fun.
