Deer are the reason we do not go to late-night parties

There is nothing exciting going on at our house since we returned from our trip to Columbus. So it’s back to my 1980s diary for enjoyment. We wouldn’t have had such a lull in activities in the 1980s. We were young and fun. We actually went out and did things with our family and friends.

Even my sister and I once had a girls night out that went late, and we didn’t get home until 11 p.m. That is unthinkable today. Now, if it doesn’t happen during daytime hours, it’s not happening. Of course, our girls nights out weren’t that exciting and usually included grocery shopping.

But old age is setting in. I recently saw a meme on the internet that read: “I used to sneak out of my house to go to parties. Now I sneak out of parties to go to my house.”

This meme is so true. OK, I never snuck out to go to a party, but I definitely now sneak out of parties/events to go home.

According to a list of artificial intelligence reasoning, when you are younger, parties offered a lot more allure. There is a sense of rebellion and independence, dating and romance (not interested), and hanging out with friends (this is still good, but not after 9 p.m.).

A decent bedtime is an important thing. At one time we used to host a Super Bowl party, but then you know how late that goes on and we had to go to work the next day.

Anyway, now, as adults, you realize all the cons of late-night partying. The first is safety concerns, and by that, I mean deer. They do not follow traffic laws for safe roadway crossing. They can pop out at any time, but they mostly do it at night.

This leads us to our next con of late-night partying — legal ramifications. This is when a deer jumps out in front of you on your way home from a party. You could hit another vehicle or damage property inadvertently, of course. Whose fault is it? No, not the deer; it’s you. There are other points to consider, like swerving and secondary accidents. You have to keep control even though deer are out to sabotage any evening plans you have.

And to keep personal injury lawyers in business, the deer are probably getting kickbacks.

Maybe someone should invent a video game based on avoiding crashes with deer. Don’t play it on your phone while driving.

There’s another popular phrase: “Nothing good ever happens after midnight.” This is another excellent reason not to stay out late. Sometimes when Joe and I are watching the news and there is a report of a crime, it’s in the wee hours of the morning. Why are these people out? They should be at home, in bed and sleeping.

For us older folks, I’d like to change that phrase to, “Nothing good ever happens after 9 p.m.” With one exception, maybe fireworks, but you can watch those on television.

Let’s end with a story from 1987. It was Saturday, Aug. 8. Joe and I got home from vacation and did lots of camper cleanup. Then we decided to take my younger brother and our oldest nephew to Tuscora Park for swimming. After swimming, everyone played on the playground and rode the rides. We got pizza. Then we went somewhere else (Putt-in-Time Putt Putt Golf Course) to play miniature golf. We didn’t get home until 11 p.m., so we had the boys stay overnight.

Whew. Only one of these activities per day would fly now. I feel a nap coming on.
