‘Color Our World’ with reading at WCPL

Wayne County Public Library is inviting families to dive into a summer of books, creativity and community fun with its “Color Our World” Summer Reading Club, which began May 27 and runs through July 26. The free program encourages reading across all age groups with the chance to earn prizes and participate in programs hosted at each library location.

Summer Reading Club helps prevent summer learning loss. Studies show children who don’t read over summer break can lose up to three months of reading progress, and that learning gap compounds over time. Reading even five books over the summer can help prevent this, and incorporating just 10-15 minutes of reading a day supports vocabulary, fluency and comprehension development.

To participate, families can visit any WCPL location to pick up a reading log or register using the Beanstack app. Children and teens track time spent reading, earning prizes and drawing entries for every five hours logged — up to 50 hours. Adults also can participate by logging the number of books they read for prize drawings. Reading material can come from any source including the library, home, audiobooks, comic books or being read to.

Children can earn up to four free books of their choice while teens can earn up to three. Grand prize drawings for children and teens will take place at the end of the program.
