The Dover Public Library will host local artist and poet Stephanie Space for a program titled Making My Peace Wednesday, July 23 at 6:30 p.m. in the library’s community room.
During the program Space will share the story of her artistic evolution and how her creative process has changed over time. She will bring several finished pieces to display, show a work in progress and demonstrate her method of textile-based art. The program also will include a discussion about the value of creative expression and how it can enhance everyday life. Attendees are welcome to ask questions.
Space began her artistic journey as an oil painter but gradually started incorporating bits of fabric into her paintings using glue. Today, most of her work is composed almost entirely of fabric, which she cuts into small pieces and bonds to a surface using heat, glue, or sometimes needle and thread. She combines textiles with other materials such as beads and bits of mirrors to create textured compositions.
Drawing inspiration from nature, self-reflection, world cultures and fragments of her own poetry, Space explores symbolism — both universal and personal — through texture, pattern and color. She aims to create work that resonates emotionally with the viewer.
A Dover native, Space earned her bachelor’s degree in English literature from Kent State University, where she also minored in studio art and creative writing with a concentration in poetry. She lives in New Philadelphia with her husband Tom. The couple enjoys spending time with their five adult children and five grandchildren.
