On March 2 in the predawn hours, members of Wooster Township Fire and Rescue Association, their family, friends, community members and students will gather at Triway High School to prepare for the 38th annual Pancake Day. Between 75 and 100 volunteers work to create the pancakes.

“This fundraiser started as a way for our association to raise money to purchase equipment that would not otherwise be possible for the fire department,” Fire Chief Dallas Terrell said.

Pancake Day is the department's only fundraiser.

In the past funds have been used for essential equipment. This year the money raised will be used toward equipment mounting for the new fire engine and to update essential hand tools and supplies.

The traditional menu remains the same and includes sausage; applesauce; choice of milk, orange juice, water or coffee; and the department's all-you-can-eat pancakes. All Terrell would reveal about the pancakes was they're made from an in-house secret recipe that was created on year two of this event.

Local businesses pitch in with a variety of donations. Along with other donors and sponsors, Triway Local Schools donates the cafeteria and kitchen, Smuckers helps with the syrup, Smith Dairy helps with milk and butter, Twin Maple Farms and 3-D Meats help with sausage, and Amos helps with waste disposal.

This year there are two raffles — the traditional cash prize raffle and the other for a donated four-burner gas grill.

As in previous years, Girl Scouts will sell cookies. Clinton Township Fire Department will sell green reflective address signs, and there will be information available about smoke detectors, carbon-monoxide detectors, home safety checklists, escape plans and fire-prevention materials for kids. Red Cross also will have some home safety items.

“New this year, Wooster Community Hospital will have a hands-only CPR learning station,” Terrell said.

Wooster Township Fire and Rescue Association Pancake Day will run from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Carryout and drive-thru pickup will be available.

Purchase tickets from department personnel or at the fire station, 1917 Millersburg Road, Wooster. Pancake tickets are $5 in advance and $6 at the door. Kids age 8 and under are free. Raffle tickets are $1 each and six for $5.

The Wooster Township Fire and Rescue Association appreciates all the community support.

“This event would not happen if it wasn't for our outstanding community support, friends and families of the Wooster Township and Triway area that come out, enjoy a great meal and fellowship,” Terrell said.
