Claymont High School’s mock trial team advanced to state finals after competing in the Ohio Center for Law-Related Education Mock Trial regional competition. The event took place at the Washington County Courthouse in Marietta on Feb. 16. Out of 200 teams statewide, only 28 made it to the next level. Claymont is the sole representative from Tuscarawas County.

The team, consisting of five students, showcased their legal skills by acting as attorneys and witnesses in an unscripted trial. This year’s case focused on the application of the Excessive Fines Clause of the Eighth Amendment, specifically addressing property forfeiture resulting from a crime. The team dedicated time to studying legal principles and crafting persuasive arguments.

Several students were recognized for their performance. Senior Elie Baker and sophomore Cora Dotts received Outstanding Attorney Awards while freshman Ashley Yang earned the Outstanding Witness Award. The team is under the guidance of coach Judge James Ong, with support from teacher Heather Dotts.

The team is now preparing for the state tournament, which will be held in Columbus March 7-9.
