Shreve Migration Sensation is March 9

The 2024 Shreve Migration Sensation, a birding event within the more than 5,000 acres of the Killbuck Marsh Wildlife Area and Funk Bottoms, will be held Saturday, March 9 from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. The annual event draws birders from all over the state of Ohio and beyond.
Attendees should register, grab some breakfast and pick up a map at the Clinton Township Building, 205 E. McConkey St., Shreve, then head out to the manned spotting locations. Sites will be manned from 8 a.m. to noon with experienced spotters to assist in finding and identifying the various bird species that migrate through the Killbuck Marsh Wildlife Area each spring.
A new observation platform has been constructed on the north side of state Route 95 in Funk, where representatives from ODNR Department of Wildlife and The Wilderness Center will be on hand to assist. The Wilderness Center will focus its efforts toward young birders and beginners and will have binoculars available to borrow.
Other activities include the following:
—Vendors and nonprofit booths open in the Clinton Township Building from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
—Tours of Brown’s Lake Bog, a rare bog ecosystem hosting carnivorous plants, from 9 a.m. to noon. Hiking trails are throughout the property.
—Dip netting in the marsh sponsored by the United Titanium Bug Zoo from 10 a.m. to noon.
—Medina Raptor Center at The Gathering Place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. See live birds up close.
—Passport activity for the kids from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Pick up a passport at the library and head out to collect stamps at sites in town and throughout the marsh.
—Children’s games and activities at the library from 10-11 a.m. and noon to 2 p.m. with staff from The Wilderness Center.
—Shreve BBQ Chicken can be picked up at Shreve Auto Repair from noon until sold out. Seating will be available in the Clinton Township Building.
All who register will be entered into a drawing for the opportunity to go birding at Big Spring — open water all winter within the wildlife refuge, off limits to the public.
