Strasburg Mayor Bruce Metzger and village administrator Mike Rosenberry met with Mark Malcuit about opening Seventh Street Northwest from Dale Avenue through Williams Village.

At the July 22 council meeting, Metzger said there are no laterals or water/sewer taps installed at the site. He said Malcuit said he will do the work. Council member Jeff Smith said water/sewer taps also must be connected to property owned by Malcuit’s located on Dundee-Strasburg Road and annexed into the village within five years.

At the July 2 council meeting, residents from Williams Village expressed concern about the street being opened and more traffic coming through the housing development. Village employees placed a dirt barricade at the site many years ago so traffic could not come through on an unpaved road. Metzger will visit Malcuit again next week about the matter.

In another matter

“This is a sore subject with me. I don’t understand why the Ohio Department of Transportation can’t put up red/yellow flashing lights at Fourth Street and Wooster Avenue Southeast. ODOT has never done anything for us,” council member Marty Zehnder said. “Why can’t they help to make the crosswalk safer? And why won’t they work with us? This is a main route, and they made the gas station pay for the traffic light at Ninth Street Southwest.”

Police Cpl. Connor Bailey said one reason is when people see red flashing lights, they think it is an emergency. Metzger said the work completed at the crosswalk has helped. Strobe lights will be installed.

Council also did the following:

—Passed as an emergency a resolution appointing Lisa Edie as the part-time park employee. Randy Troyer, former employee, is no longer working at the park. Edie will receive $18 per hour.

—Heard Tyler Triplett, street employee, submitted a two-week notice to resign. Applications are available on the village website.

—Passed a resolution by emergency increasing interim pay for certain firefighters until further notice. Ross Gardner, Colin Trout and Andrew Braham will received $2 per hour over current rate of pay; Maria Boswell will received an additional $4 per hour; and Steven Joki, acting fire chief, will receive a rate of pay established for the fire chief.

—Learned seven individuals have been interviewed for fire chief.

—Lauded Nathan Kanouff, water and sewer superintendent, for responding to a residence in Williams Village that had water spraying in the basement. Kanouff was able to make repairs in a short time.

—Addressed blind spots that hinder vehicles pulling out onto streets. Shrubs can only be 3 feet high, and trees need to be trimmed. Letters will be sent.

—Heard two men have been sleeping at the park. The park is closed from dusk to dawn. Police obtained a hotel room for one of the individuals.

—Heard the sidewalk at Fourth Street Southeast is expected to be completed, weather permitting.

—Heard light poles at the park are operating and flood lights were installed at a cost of $3,497, and two lights were replaced at $997.

—Learned Federal Signal is projecting the emergency fire installation will take place next month.

—Heard council needs to give a Third Street property owner five days to clean it up or the village will clean it up and place costs on the property taxes.
