The Harrison Coal & Reclamation Historical Park will hold its 27th annual Harrison Coal & Reclamation Historical Park Dinner-Auction on May 8 at the Hopedale VFD social hall, 103 Firehouse Lane, Hopedale.

Doors will open at 4 p.m., the dinner will be at 5 p.m. and the auction at 7 p.m. The meal includes chicken, beef, mashed potatoes, gravy, noodles, green beans, salad, dessert and a drink.

Following the meal, there will be a short program, induction of officers, a Chinese auction and a live auction. Two auction items include Dave Barnhouse paintings: “Old Friends” and “The Pike Inn,” just recently completed.

The Pike Inn was a well-known bar/restaurant on the Old U.S. Route 22 between Hopedale and Bloomingdale, known for steaks and pasta and originally owned by the Gentile family. Blanche and Dominick Topazio owned and operated it for 31 years. It was closed in the mid-1990s, but the building still remains today. The portrait on canvas shows The Pike Inn as it looked in the 1940s.

There also will be shovel and mining pictures, coal glasses, Hanna Magazines, mugs, hats, carbide lamps, patches, other mining- and nonmining-related items including T-shirts, door prizes, and a 50/50. Tickets are on sale for $20 per person through park members or by sending a check or money order to the HCRHP at 143 S. Main St., Cadiz, OH 43907.
