Final resealing on the Lawrence Township River Community Park walking trail took place May 30, according to Perry Myers, road supervisor for the township. Myers told Lawrence Township trustees T&G Sealcoating did an excellent job at the May 30 board of trustees meeting. He said weather and an equipment breakdown delayed the originally scheduled completion date, but the results were worth the wait.

Trustee Don Ackerman said the Dollar General has broken ground for its new store on state Route 212. Fire Chief Shawn Lynch said the review of the store’s fire plan is complete, and there are no concerning issues to be addressed.

Lynch also said the parking lot plan has been changed since the original plan was presented. Due to those changes, Lynch conveyed a safety concern regarding how semi-trucks will exit or enter the parking lot without having to back up in the lot or onto state Route 212.

Chairman Matt Ritterbeck said he will ask zoning inspector Ron Weekley to contact Jeff Mattingly, the real estate broker involved in the development of the store, to learn more about the issue.

In other matters

Myers reported receiving five bids for 2024 paving, the lowest coming from Newton Asphalt. Trustees voted to hire Newton Asphalt for paving to begin late summer or early fall at a cost of $104,362. Myers said the early estimates for the project were $151,000, so the bid from Newton Asphalt was a welcome surprise.

Myers said curb work on Millbrook Square should be completed by June 7, weather permitting, after which the crew will move on to Indian Hill Drive. He also said the equipment parked near the Lawrence Township Cemetery is for the upcoming county water and sewer project.

Lynch addressed the fireworks plan for the Sparks of Giving charity event scheduled for July 20. He said he reviewed the plan with the fireworks company, which will set off fireworks from the Wilkshire Golf Course, and determined it will be safe to keep Wilkshire Boulevard open for motorists.

Administrative assistant Martina Mann informed trustees of a request received from a township resident wanting to hold a small birthday party at the township’s River Community Park. Trustees said it was fine to use the park and to set up a small tent but that the basketball courts need to also be available to the public during the party.

Mann also presented trustees with information on purchasing an extended warranty for the new large-format printer purchased earlier in the month. Trustees have nearly a year to decide.

Mann also said the township received a $250 donation from the Village of Zoar toward maintenance of the compost bin service in 2024.

Trustees agreed to assign two township road crew members to help with the Strawberry Festival 5k run by monitoring the Industrial Parkway section of the race.

Trustees also agreed to move the Thursday, June 22 meeting to Monday, July 1 due to scheduling conflicts.

Thanks and recognition

Ritterbeck thanked everyone who showed up to help clean up the grassy areas around the entrance and exit ramps to Interstate 77 South on May 11.

The trustees congratulated the Strasburg Tigers on their advancement to the OHSAA state championship game and members of the Tusky Valley boys and girls track teams who are competing in the OHSAA State Track and Field Meet.

Ackerman also expressed thanks to all those who helped with the Memorial Day parade and ceremony at the cemetery.

The next meeting will take place Monday, July 1 at 7 p.m. at the Township Hall. Otherwise, the Lawrence Township Board of Trustees meets the second and last Thursday of every month at 7 p.m. at the Charles E. Lundenberger Hall, 10867 Industrial Parkway NW, Bolivar. All meetings are open to the public.
