Program offers produce to low-income families

Several area markets are participating in a statewide program to make fresh produce more accessible to low-income families. Produce Perks is an Ohio nonprofit with a stated mission to improve the health of under-served communities by increasing affordable access to health food.
The program additionally increases revenues for Ohio farmers and retailers, thus strengthening the food system. In Wayne County, Buehler's has been participating in the program for several years, and Local Roots Market and Cafe recently joined. Buehler's also participates through its stores in Coshocton, New Philadelphia and Dover.
Kate Frichtl is the community engagement coordinator for Local Roots.
“Local Roots is proud to participate in Produce Perks' Fruit & Veggie Coupon Program because we firmly believe that every family deserves access to fresh, locally sourced fruits and vegetables,” she said.
At Local Roots qualified participants fill out a self-attestation form in the store and receive a coupon booklet for fruits and vegetables. At Buehler's a coupon for produce is automatically generated when a customer shops using their SNAP card. For specific guidelines inquire at the store.
Produce Perks is available to all Ohioans receiving SNAP. As a nonprofit it accepts donations to help fund the program. For more information visit https://produceperks.org/.
“By participating in Produce Perks' Fruit & Veggie Coupon Program,” Frichtl said, “we're not only contributing to the health and well-being of our community by making healthy food more accessible, but also supporting our local farmers by increasing their sales. It's a fantastic opportunity to make a positive impact on both ends of the food supply chain.”
