On May 19 volunteers from various local organizations came together at Christ United Church of Christ to build 15 beds for children in need. This collaborative effort, known as Sweet Dreams, included representatives from CUCC, Trinity United Methodist Church, The Salvation Army Orrville-Maiwurm Service Center, Orrville Area United Way and the broader community.

Sweet Dreams is one of Orrville Area United Way’s seven Percy Programs, which are direct service initiatives aimed at addressing gaps in local services through partnerships with schools, churches, nonprofits and government entities. Since its inception in 2012, Sweet Dreams has evolved from providing essential bedding items to organizing complete bed builds for children in Dalton, Kidron, Marshallville, North Lawrence and Orrville. Each bed build provides a frame, mattress, sheets, blankets and pillows for children from low-income families.

Funding for the program is provided by Orrville Area United Way while The Salvation Army Orrville administers the program, leveraging its connections with those in need and referring agencies. Christ United Church of Christ plays a role in organizing the bed build events and coordinating volunteers.

“We are incredibly grateful for the volunteers and the support from our community,” said Jenny McFarren, community impact coordinator at OAUW. “The need for this program continues to grow, and the 15 beds built today will go to 14 children currently on the wait list.”

In 2023 the Sweet Dreams program completed 10 beds, and in the first half of 2024, The Salvation Army Orrville has already distributed that same number. With the latest build, Sweet Dreams is addressing the immediate needs of local children, providing them with a comfortable place to sleep.

As the Sweet Dreams program expands, the need for donations remains critical. The community can contribute by donating new twin sheets, comforters, pillows or making financial donations to support the purchase of mattresses and lumber. Contributions can be made by check to Orrville Area United Way or online at www.orrvilleareaunitedway.org, with a note indicating Sweet Dreams.
