Northwestern Ruritans learn about CAB

The Northwestern Ruritan Club met Aug. 12 for the monthly dinner/meeting at Northwestern High School. President Jamie Bowman welcomed members and guests. The group joined in singing “America,” and the invocation was given by Pastor Paul Bartholomew. The dinner was served by the school cooks.
Member Dr. Dick Wiley introduced Grace Baxter, account marketing manager for Certified Angus Beef in Wooster. The business was started by Mick Colvin in the Northwestern School District 45 years ago.
Baxter grew up in Texas, was involved in 4-H and FFA, and graduated with her bachelor’s degree from Texas Tech University and received a master’s degree from Oklahoma State University.
CAB, a nonprofit organization owned by the American Angus Association and operating with a board of directors made up of Angus ranchers, only owns the logo and trademarks and does not own any of the cattle or beef that qualify for the program.
For cattle to qualify based on Angus breed traits, there are 10 quality specifications to ensure marbling, consistent sizing, quality, appearance and tenderness. CAB also has an integrity tracking system that accounts for every pound sold from the packing plants and through the food supply chain to the consumer.
Additionally, the July meeting minutes had been sent to the directors for corrections and approval. Chuck Beck’s treasurer’s report was approved subject to audit. A motion was passed that the club send $300 to Ruritan National as an investment in the Build Your Dollar Scholarship Program. A motion also was passed that the club make budgeted donations to the Mohican Church Grocery Bag, Panda Preschool, Weekday Christian Education, West Salem Outreach and Backpack Blessings.
Bowman said many of the flags for the club's Parade of Flags need replaced, and a motion was passed for the purchase of 100 new flags. The Aug. 13 Roadside Pickup was discussed, and Beck also reported the next Huskie Brigade mailing will be in November.
With no more business, the meeting was adjourned with the recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance. The next dinner meeting will be Tuesday, Sept. 3 at 6:30 p.m. at Northwestern High School, with directors meeting beforehand at 6 p.m. in the school library. The program will be by the Citizenship & Parade of Flags Committee, with John Ertl arranging.
