Mountain climber coming to library

The Dover Public Library invites everyone on Wednesday, Jan. 24 to hear the personal account of Sugarcreek native Larry “Ike” Compton, who in October 2022 climbed the face of the highest mountain on Earth. He will share pictures of his adventure and show a video he made while climbing Mt. Everest. The program will begin at 6:30 p.m. in the community room.
Compton, a retired elementary principal, has always enjoyed the outdoors. In 2015 he reached the summit of Mt. Kilimanjaro in Africa.
In 2018 he hiked the Inca Trail in Peru. On two different occasions, Compton and three other local hikers had to call off attempts to hike Mt. Everest in the Himalayas due to the COVID-19 lockdown. But in October 2022, the team accomplished their goal, which was to reach the highest base camp at 18,598 feet.
“Not every community can claim to know someone who has climbed Mt. Everest,” said Sherrel Rieger, programming specialist at the library. “Larry will inspire us to explore the outdoors and to feel the sense of accomplishment and exhilaration that comes when we push ourselves out of our comfort zone.”
