With the Tusky Valley Primary School no longer operating in Mineral City, council is working with ODOT on removing the two traffic lights in the village and replacing them with two-way stops.

An ODOT traffic light analysis in 2019 advised the lights were not necessary, but they were maintained to create a safer environment for school children crossing the street and buses traveling to the school.

Mayor Laurie Green said the traffic lights will be covered for 90 days before they are removed.

Green went on to report the Tuscarawas County Health Department will spray for mosquitoes on July 29 after sample mosquitoes from the Lindentree Road area tested positive for West Nile virus.

Reports to council

Darla Daugherty from Mineral City/Sandy Ambulance presented a $400 donation to be used for the fire department’s demolition derby.

Fiscal officer Becky Carpenter reported receiving a $21,000 grant for the village to purchase a new HVAC system at the library and Village Hall. Carpenter also reviewed a bulletin from the Ohio auditor giving guidance for reporting instances of fraud.

Street Supervisor Sam Moore said the crews are painting curbs and inspecting catch basins. He also said work on the sidewalks at the TV Tavern should be complete by July 19. Moore will investigate a complaint about the need for patching on Third Street.

Council President Terry Nill said the fire department will continue to work through the state’s discount program for fire truck tires. Moore reported accepting Jeffrey Weaver as a new volunteer firefighter.

In zoning Nill said a letter was sent to a resident who has a car with expired plates parked on the street. He also reported a couple of residents will need to be notified their lawn needs to be mowed. Nill said if the village needs to mow it, costs should be submitted to the county auditor for assessment on the property.

Nill also reported for the library, saying the Queen of Hearts jackpot of $5,537 was won by Margaret Gursky. He said the library is currently selling $10 tickets for the Oct. 19 Cow Patty Bingo fundraiser.

Nill also issued a reminder of the golf outing fundraiser on Aug. 31 at Zoar Village Golf Course. The outing benefits both the library and the fire department.

In old business the fiscal officer was asked to look into funding to enable the village to hire a building inspector.

Mineral City Council meets the second and fourth Thursday of each month at 7 p.m. at Village Hall. All meetings are open to the public.
