Mineral City to address issue of feral cats

Mineral City Mayor Laurie Green told village council the county health department has sent letters to all municipalities regarding the presence of feral cats.

“We are not the only ones dealing with the issue,” Green said. “I’ve had discussion about it with a few other people, nothing formal, but I think we ought to do something about it.”

Green asked fiscal officer Becky Carpenter to contact the Tuscarawas County TNR Project to learn more about the Trap, Neuter, Release program they offer.

Green also said a decision was made to postpone the village sidewalk project until 2025. Green said council had been considering applying for federal grant funds through Ohio Mid-Eastern Governments Association, but it would require too much seed money from the village. Instead, Green said she wants to make the project a budget item next year.

Zoning matters

Council member Beth Nill reported having sent multiple letters to residents who are violating zoning regulations governing junk cars, high grass and property maintenance. It also was reported that one of three vehicles causing a problem last month has been relocated.

Council also discussed a property on Grant Street with multiple violations and a complaint about a lot on Miners Street being overrun with groundhogs. The property involved was one of the three where houses burned down.

Other reports to council

Council President Terry Nill reported for the street committee about problems with a catch basin at the TV Tavern. Council discussed the speed limit, which should be set in the business district once the traffic lights are removed.

Parks and recreation chair Rick Cain said he was quoted a cost of $121,600 to install basketball and pickleball courts at the new park. The cost includes engineering and construction management fees. Cain said he is still gathering costs for the picnic shelter, walking trail and playground equipment.

Terry Nill reminded council of the Library and Volunteer Fire Department Golf Outing fundraiser on Aug. 31 at Zoar Village Golf Course. Beth Nill said sponsors are still needed. Anyone interested can call her at 330-859-2904.

Before adjourning, council heard the first reading of the ordinance to replace the traffic lights in the village with stop signs.

Mineral City Council meets the second and fourth Thursday of each month at 5 p.m. at Village Hall. All meetings are open to the public.
