Marijuana dispensaries to be prohibited in Port Washington

Port Washington Council members addressed the issue of retail marijuana dispensaries during the Aug. 6 meeting. All council members present were in favor of prohibiting dispensaries in the village. Solicitor Mark Perlaky said he will review similar ordinances passed in nearby communities and draft legislation that also will incorporate state laws governing dispensaries.
In other business council authorized having Council President Joe Bourne contact Frontier Power about supplying propane for the new furnace at the street department garage. Kelly’s Heating and Cooling installed the new furnace at a cost of $6,400, which has already been paid.
Council also approved a request from the county water and sewer department to allow Tory Gibbs to tie into the county’s main sewer line by laying pipes under North High Street. Gibbs is building a home near North High Street and Wolf Road.
Reports to council
DJ Meek, village zoning inspector, said he recently issued two permits, both for fencing. Meek also said he had received the final plan for the village sidewalk project from the Ohio Department of Transportation’s Transportation Alternatives Program.
In the absence of Police Chief Rocky Dusenberry, Mayor Tom Gardner had two items to report. He said the police cruiser was out of commission for one week while it was being serviced. Gardner also said a previously approved police dashcam has been ordered, but the estimated time of arrival is unknown.
Street Supervisor Rick Swiger reported he has been marking and striping the crosswalks at the village square.
Bourne reported the fire department answered three fire calls in July and that the speed limit sign on Arch Street near the cemetery is missing.
Port Washington Council meets the first and third Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m. at Village Hall. All meetings are open to the public.
