Man who shot Wooster woman had stolen handgun

An Akron man barred from possessing firearms allegedly shot and killed a Wooster woman with a stolen handgun, according to charges brought by the grand jury.Andre I. Wilson, 29, of 979 Delia Ave., is charged in Wayne County Common Pleas Court with reckless homicide, possession of weapons under disability, receiving stolen property and two counts of improper handling of a firearm in a motor vehicle.The charges stem from Feb. 16, when Wilson fatally injured 29-year-old Elisesha S. Mathis. According to Wooster Police reports, the shooting occurred at approximately 11:30 p.m. when Mathis and Wilson were inside a van parked in front of a North Buckeye Street residence. Mathis and Wilson had been out that evening with a group of people and were stopped at the Buckeye Street residence, where one of the group lives. While there, Wilson was handling a handgun when it went off, firing a single bullet. Mathis was shot in the upper torso and later died from the wound. Wilson was intoxicated at the time of the shooting, according to police reports.Wilson is under a firearms disability after being previously convicted of domestic violence.Wayne County Prosecuting Attorney Dan Lutz said the firearm used in the shooting was stolen in Rittman in December.Wilson has pleaded not guilty to the charges. Trial is scheduled for April 29.
